When you’re cruising the internet at 2 AM, did you ever stop to think that you’re smoothly “surfing the web” because a bunch of ‘Telecom Ninjas’ are fiercely guarding your uninterrupted browsing experience?
Probably not, right? Well, they are! And one of their secret weapons is ‘redundancy.’
“Redundancy” refers to the process of having backup equipment or systems in place to keep services up and running, even when there’s a hiccup at the main site. The world of telecom network redundancy is like an iceberg — you only see a tiny bit, while the huge, complex mass is hidden under the surface.
There are, broadly speaking, two flavors of redundancy — Geo and Local.
Geo redundancy is akin to keeping an identical replica of your beloved vintage car in a garage on the other side of the country. If a tree topples over and crushes your vehicle (strange, but let’s imagine), no sweat! You hop on a flight, and your twin car is waiting, ready to hit the road.
