Living conditions have always improved with more energy usage. Think about it: the leap from candles to electric lights, from horse-drawn carriages to electric cars, from handwritten letters to instant digital communication. Each step forward has been powered by more energy consumption, not less.

The Illusion of Zero-Energy Living

There’s a fringe belief that living with zero energy is somehow noble.

That belief usually emanates from someone typing on their pristine Macbook Pro while sipping an oat latte in an indie coffee joint built on what used to be unliveable swamp land.

Living without energy is tantamount to death. Energy is fundamental to life. We can’t just wish it away because some types of energy are less than ideal. The goal should be to find and use better sources, not to cut back to nothing.

Clean Energy vs. Practicality

Clean energy is fantastic — in theory. In practice, it’s often expensive and less efficient. Take solar power, for instance. It’s great during the day, but what about at night? Batteries? Sure, but they add cost and complexity. The same goes for wind power — it’s not always…
