In a world where excess is often equated with success, the idea of deliberately embracing scarcity seems almost counter-intuitive.

Yet, paradoxically, it’s in the art of scarcity that we might just find the key to a more abundant self.

Let me mansplain.

Consider your modern lifestyle: prolonged slumbers, comfort oozing everywhere, consuming more than you create, rambling through the physical, and cyber, worlds to discover new experiences.

But could this constant excess be dulling the novelty of our lives?

Perhaps we, as slightly more advanced apes, are inadvertently switching off our basic, primitive mechanisms through this life of plenty. This realisation dawned on me during my experiment (which has since become a lifestyle) of eating one meal a day. The experience transformed my relationship with food, turning it from mere sustenance into something I deeply adore.

Now leaner, hungrier, and more mentally alert, I’m applying this principle of scarcity to other aspects of my life: media consumption, both social and traditional, experiences, and even the realm of my inner thoughts and emotions.

Instead of being bombarded by a barrage of feelings and external opinions on what should matter to me, I’m learning to filter and focus.

This ‘detox’, if you will, is more than just a break from the norm — it’s a system reset.

By embracing scarcity, we enhance our patience, become more present, and reconnect with our true purpose. It’s about reshaping our lives and consciously steering them towards something greater, something more meaningful.

And here’s a curious thought to ponder: in a metaphorical sense, I’d rather be chased by a well-fed lion than a hungry one.

There’s a certain wisdom in that — a well-fed lion might be less desperate, less relentless.

In the same vein, when we’re not constantly chasing after excess, we might just find that we’re more focused, more driven, and ironically, more fulfilled.

While the notion of creating scarcity to achieve abundance might sound oxymoronic, it’s an idea worth exploring.

Maybe, just maybe, it’s the scarcity that brings out the richness of life, making us appreciate what we have, and in turn, leading us to the abundance we seek.
