My reverence of our part-fragile, mostly-resillient human body is mostly due to recently reading Bill Bryson's unputdownable "The Body". It is a weighty but indispensable read — pick it up. Besides insane facts, it also contains unsung heroes, daring pioneers, outrageous medical practises and serendipitous discoveries. Similar to the one you describe so lucsiously in your article.
