Arsene Wenger — The Quintessential Transformational Leader
Arsène Wenger is currently FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development. But his magnum opus was being Arsenal Football Club’s longest-serving and most successful manager since its inception in 1886.
Widely respected, greatly admired, and with a trophy-laden cabinet, Arsène’s immense contribution to football and club leadership makes for a sterling career, the extent of which isn’t fully captured in his rather prosaic title of “Football Manager”.
His work revolutionized English football, galvanized an army of global Gooners (colloquial term for Arsenal’s fanbase), and brought back glory days to a hitherto sleepy suburb in North London.
As a childhood Gooner, Arsène’s passion, attitude, experience, and nous made him my role model. And through my learnings from the “Leadership and Organizational Behaviours” module, I’ve grown to appreciate his leadership style further.
This paper is my attempt at bridging the theoretical learnings from the module to Arsène’s practical demonstrations of leadership principles through referenced quotes from the man himself.
