Is Monarchy The Best Form Of Government?
As the US presidential elections heat up, allow me to mansplain.
Let’s get contrarian for a moment: Monarchy might just be the best form of government. Disagree? Let me mansplain.
Democracy’s Shortcomings
Humans work on incentives. Elected officials in a democracy have a narrow time frame. They know they’ve got a limited window to make an impact — and to secure their own futures. This short-term horizon pushes them to prioritize immediate gains. Despite the lofty talk of selflessness and public service, their motivations are often personal. They need to show results fast, and they need those results to benefit them as much as anyone else.
Contrast this with a monarchy. A monarch’s time horizon is essentially forever. They’re not just thinking about their reign — they’re thinking about their great-great-great-grandchildren. They don’t need to appease voters every few years. Sure, they need to keep their subjects reasonably happy to avoid a revolt or coup, but their goals are long-term. They can afford to invest in projects that take decades or centuries to bear fruit.
The Illusion of Choice
