I used to think that too - it's only when I added up the costs of ownership & upkeep that I decided to go for it. Sure, the perceptions persist but I mean, I'd rather own something I enjoy rather than cae in to "societal" pressure. Trust me - you won't regret it! And hey, suburban moms could be "tech bros" too :D
