I made up for my first sober Friday in a decade by hitting Dublin’s finest establishments straight after our mammoth 6-hour “Leadership and Organisation” session with my equally eager MBA colleagues.

While I am too dreary-eyed to remember the class (and the nightly shenanigans) in exacting detail, I do have a few notes scribbled from an interactive, actionable lecture.

A lot of these are influenced by the course pre-reading, excellent interactions in class, books (Drive, The Tyranny of Metrics, and Rebel Ideas), and my meandering mind.

Here they are.

1. Autonomy is a privilege

Being in a psychologically safe environment and having autonomy motivate us to perform at our best.

Fostering autonomy within your team — where every member feels valued, psychologically safe, and intrinsically motivated is vital.

I write because my intrinsic motivation spurs me to. I can decide exactly what and how I want to write about. I am the sole author and distributor of my content.

This is autonomy and it’s what our souls crave.
