3 Tricks For Persuasive Writing From Larry David
I binged most of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” recently.
Not only did it turn out to be utterly watchable the seventh time around, but it also gave me three unmissable pointers to write better.
1. Don’t Pull Your Punches
You will either love or hate Larry David’s character. There is no middle ground.
I admire the cantankerous, politically incorrect, selfish, shallow bugger.
He says what we all think. And he says them repeatedly.
His writing needles you.
You’ll be raging, laughing and wishing for him to fail. But you’ll never be indifferent.
Larry has the audacity to take everyday situations and inject fantastical comedy into them. That’s engaging content. To make the mundane miraculous is not easy.
He pushes your buttons all the time. He doesn’t dumb down his references, sugarcoat his insults, or beat about the bush. Direct, uncaring, honest, relentless, and true to his inner voice.
He says what he thinks. #nofilter
Note To Self: Don’t edit for the audience’s validation. Put it all out there, warts and all.
